Understanding Music Licensing Laws in Trinidad and Tobago

Music-Users who use or intend to use music while operating their businesses, are legally obligated to seek permission from the rights holders i.e., the owners [authors, composers, publishers, performers, and producers]

The Copyright Act (1997 grants music owners the exclusive right to authorise or prohibit the public performance, reproduction, broadcast or making available of their music.

When is a licence necessary

A licence is required when music is performed outside of a domestic setting, such as with family and friends.

Public performances of music, in various locations, including hotels, restaurants and bars, cinemas, members’ clubs, shopping malls, live event spaces, factories, fetes or when used as music on hold all require a licence from COTT.
